Whenever you’re visiting Penang, you’ll never run out of stuff to do. After all, it is a lovely place, full of culture and heritage, with its community taking centre stage. From chowing down on delicacies like Curry Mee to strolling down the breezy Karpal Singh drive, it’s hard to ever feel bored with the ocean close by.

Now, of course, we’re here to spill some local secrets. Would you like to hear them?

Located within the lively and bustling streets of Georgetown lies a sweet spot. The Angel Community Cafe, which recently opened its doors, set up its foundations within the four walls of a 120-year-old Hutton Lane heritage building. Established by four ladies, Jazz, Kar Yee, Desline, and Kinki, the centre is visualised as a hub for various young entrepreneurs to promote their products.

Now, when it comes to the dessert sold at this place, we have some points to make. And no, we’re not lying when we say it’s some of the best we have ever tasted in Penang! Keeping up with the locals’ keen authenticity, the desserts are prepared with the freshest of ingredients daily.

Of course, we couldn’t say all that without actually visiting the cafe. We got a chance to try their fu chuk yi mai (ginkgo barley). Indeed, the texture of the barley was indeed firm and full. No doubt, the dish’s ingredients are given special care during the preparation stage.

In addition to this, there are other daily desserts like Bubur Cha Cha, Bubur Gandum (Wheat Porridge), and Bubur Pulut Hitam (Black Glutinous Rice Porridge) that will guarantee to satisfy that sweet tooth.

Besides dessert, there are other rice dishes, special drinks, pastries, kuih, and otak-otak that you can purchase at this place. So, do be on the lookout for that as well!

What’s the best thing about this place? It certainly is the heart that runs within its walls. Angel Community Cafe is on a mission to provide a helping hand to single parents, women, young entrepreneurs, disabled individuals and SMEs.

Due to the pandemic, such individuals have suffered losses, and as such, Angel Community aims to lift them up. Therefore, the idea is to allow for a safe space for the needy to list their food and products. Subsequently, Angel Community provides a boost to them through manpower and marketing. It’s so great that they are helping out this way!

On a side note, Angel Community Cafe has a space on its top floor that is open to all non-governmental organizations (NGOs), startups, and the like, who wish to have a space to run small-scale programs. This may be suitable for holding tuition classes, yoga sessions, workshops, or maybe even some small team-building fun and game nights. Perhaps a bard could even get some DnD action in!

So, if you’re in the area, just keep a look out for the yellow building right down the corner of Jalan Hutton, Georgetown. It’s really hard to miss! Furthermore, if you wish to find out more about Angel Community Cafe and the other gems they have to offer, do check out their Facebook page!
