Malaysia’s 68th Independence Day on 31st August was a day of celebration, marked by the annual Merdeka parade in Putrajaya. Crowds filled the streets, cheering for the performers, which included Biduanita Negara Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza, who took to the stage to perform this year’s patriotic theme song, “Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni”.
However, Merdeka Day wasn’t the only thing we celebrated during the long weekend. 4 of our national athletes achieved incredible milestones at one of the most prestigious sports tournaments of the year. Women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, and mixed doubles pair of Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, gave their all and made history at the BWF World Championships in Paris.

Let’s start with Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah. The two badminton players fought hard against their opponents, world No. 1 duo Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China, in the women’s doubles category. The Malaysian pair came close, but despite their best efforts, they eventually lost 21-14, 20-22, 21-17 in the final match, which took place at the adidas Arena.
Although they missed out on the gold, the duo made history by bringing home the silver medal, the first ever for a Malaysian women’s doubles pair. It also marked the first time a Malaysian women’s doubles team had reached the World Championships final. Not only that, but this latest achievement also marked a personal best for the athletes, surpassing their previous quarter-final finish in 2023.
“I am very happy and proud to bring (Malaysian) women’s doubles to the eyes of the world. We have no regrets; we gave it everything we had. We worked hard for this medal, and our journey still has a long way to go. We will fight again,” said Pearly after arriving at KLIA. Thinnah added that they hope their achievement will inspire more women athletes to chase their dreams and work hard while also enjoying the process.

Moving on to the mixed doubles, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei also received a heroes’ welcome upon their return to Malaysia after their World Championships triumph. The pair secured a 21-15, 21-14 victory over China’s Jiang Zhengbang and Wei Yaxin in the final, making them the first Malaysian mixed doubles duo to win a gold medal at the BWF World Championships.
This historic victory also marked the first time in nearly two decades that Malaysia had claimed such a title, with the previous semi-final champions being Koo Kien Keat and Wong Pei Tty at the 2006 edition in Madrid, Spain. Congratulations to our national athletes on their groundbreaking achievements. May they continue to excel and bring home more victories in future tournaments.
