This is probably the most deserving award of the night thus far – Chloé Zhao has just made history at the Oscars 2021.
The 39-year-old isn’t just the first woman of colour to be nominated in the Best Director category, but also the first to win for “Nomadland”! She joins Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) as the only woman to win Best Director.
Here’s also another fun fact, Zhao is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe director to win the prestigious award, with her next project “Eternals” set to debut in November. Fans are already anticipating for the trailer to drop (hopefully soon).
As we celebrate the filmmaker’s historic win, Twitter user @women_direct pointed out that there are still Oscar categories where no woman has won ever. “This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that. And this is for you, you inspire me to keep going.” – Zhao said in her acceptance speech.
