The music industry has lost another star. Acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, best known for his Oscar-winning song, “Falling Slowly”, has passed away following a fatal motorcycle crash. He was 56.
The crash was a single-vehicle collision that occurred in Dublin, Ireland, in the early hours of 29th July 2026 (Wednesday). Emergency services were alerted shortly after the incident. Not much is known about the crash at the moment, and police have appealed for witnesses to aid in the ongoing investigation.
Glen’s agency, ATC Management, has released a statement regarding the musician’s death. In the post, the company wrote, “With broken hearts we announce the passing of Glen Hansard in the early hours of this morning. We are still dealing with the shock of it all, so we kindly ask that the privacy of Glen’s family, colleagues and friends is respected at this difficult time.”
A singer with a career spanning three decades, Glen is best known internationally for his role in the 2007 musical romance film, “Once”, and its accompanying soundtrack. His duet with Marketa Irglova, “Falling Slowly”, became a global hit and won the Academy Award for “Best Original Song” in 2008. He was also the long-time frontman of the rock band, The Frames.
Glen’s sudden passing took the public by surprise. Fans and fellow musicians have since taken to social media to mourn the late singer-songwriter. U2 frontman Bono shared a lengthy post on the band’s social media to pay tribute to his friend, recalling the times they performed together. The post also included a video of one of the performances.
American musician Bruce Springsteen also paid tribute to Glen on social media, writing in a statement, “Here on E Street, we are heartbroken over the death of Glen Hansard.” Another fellow musician who extended his condolences was Ed Sheeran, who wrote through Instagram Stories, “I’m grateful for the times we shared together, sending so much love to his family.”
Glen’s band The Frames also shared a touching tribute post for their late bandmate. In the post, the band described Glen as “a force of nature, a troubadour from a different time. He had that unique ability – to bring people together – that was his medicine, his great gift.” Fans have since commented on the post, expressing grief over the loss.
