As Ramadan approaches, Malaysians will see the return of their neighbourhood Ramadan bazaars. While these evening markets are great places to get a meal to break your fast, many have complained in the past about the poor quality of food sold.

Twitter user Arif E. recently posted a “warning” for vendors planning to open stalls at this year’s Ramadan bazaar. The tweet writes, “A message to Ramadan bazaar vendors”, and includes a poster of the Twitter user’s instructions for the food sold at the bazaars. These include:

  • Roti john – Don’t prepare (it) too early, four hours before breaking fast
  • Ayam percik/golek (Grilled chicken) – Ensure it’s well-done, with no signs of blood
  • Murtabak – Please wash your eggs
  • Air balang (Premixed beverages) – Boil the water (and) don’t place the ice at the bottom

The witty “notice” reminds vendors to maintain a standard of food quality when selling their products. The poster also included a note for all vendors to practice good personal hygiene and not deceive those fasting during Ramadan. The Twitter user also urged vendors in a separate tweet to cover their food or at least attempt to shoo away flies to avoid contamination.

Many netizens have reacted to the “warning”, adding their orders to the list. One directive many had is that vendors should taste test their food before selling it or at least ensure it tastes decent. Another order many had was for vendors selling kuih like curry puff and onde-onde, saying the treats should have enough fillings. Some also urged vendors to be considerate with their pricing and to keep the prices affordable, given the rising cost of living.

Hopefully, Ramadan bazaar food vendors will be mindful of these comments before opening their stalls.
