The rising cost of food in Malaysia has become a concern for many, with even simple meals unreasonably priced when taxes and service charges are factored in. A recent incident further highlighted this issue when a woman purchased a seemingly straightforward meal of a fried egg and a bowl of rice.

Recently, a female netizen took to Facebook to share a surprising receipt detailing her meal. The simple meal included one fried egg and one bowl of rice. The receipt indicated a total consumption cost of RM9.55, inclusive of a service tax amounting to 54 cents.

Breaking down the expenses, the receipt revealed that the price of the fried egg was RM6, while the bowl of rice cost RM3. According to China Press, the netizen refrained from disclosing the name or location of the restaurant. The only clue given was in the photo of the receipt itself which stated that the restaurant is located in Petaling Jaya. It was said that the customer could only express regret by simply stating, “I can only blame myself for not asking the price when I placed the order.”

The incident sparked an online discourse surrounding the need for transparent pricing and the importance of clarifying costs before placing orders. One netizen pointed out that customers retain the right to decline payment if they haven’t consumed the food yet. There was also a netizen who commented that “it’s a miracle that this kind of store can survive.“

Another netizen did a breakdown on how much it would cost if you cook it at home and that they agree restaurants will double the price of food. Meanwhile, some questioned why the woman omitted the restaurant’s name and location. With such details, it would have been helpful for context in her Facebook post.

This experience serves as a reminder for individuals to inquire about prices in advance to avoid any unexpected expenses. Despite the convenience of dining out, given the current economic climate, there’s value in honing cooking skills. We are hoping for brighter days ahead as we navigate these challenges.
