Working adults in Malaysia are familiar with the dreaded morning and evening rush hours. Whether you’re driving or taking buses and trains, you know what it’s like to go through traffic and the crowd. However, a question looms over our heads when it comes to the driving versus public transportation debate, and that is: which is better?

A viral Twitter post had netizens discussing the topic, and it started with a simple question – do you prefer to go through traffic or ride public transportation? Tons of netizens shared their opinions over which they prefer and provided several pros and cons for both options.

Driving

  • Pros

A few netizens said they favour driving so they can be in the comfort of their car and do what they want to, like eat or sing their hearts out. One comment even joked that they could even cry in peace if they were driving. Some netizens said being in a car makes them feel safer, and others say it gives them the flexibility to go wherever, whenever.

  • Cons

Many noted that the biggest downside of driving was the cost. One netizen had even spent over RM800 a month on tolls, parking, and refuelling when they drove to work but only spent RM50 when they took public transportation as they had the My50 pass. Some also said that going through traffic is too time-consuming, adding that they spent 5 hours daily on the road.

Public Transportation

  • Pros

Those who favoured public transportation mostly said they preferred it for its low monthly cost because they only pay RM50 per month for unlimited rides with the My50 pass. Some also added that public transportation gives you the freedom to do things because you’re not the one driving, even joking that it’s like being the main character in a movie. One netizen added that trains would get you to your destination on time because it follows a schedule.

According to netizens, the biggest downside to public transportation would be the crowd, with many likening it to being like sardines in a can. Some also spoke about how tiring it can be to take public transportation because you have to stand for a long time and sometimes run to catch the train. Many have also said that the train system in the Klang Valley has had a few issues lately, with trains either being late or out of service.

It seems that both have equally good and bad points – but what are your thoughts on this whole debate? Would you rather face the jam or face the crowd?
