Seeing similar designs and shapes in the fashion industry is quite common, considering the fact that many fashion labels want to capitalise on trends. However, how similar can you get until it seems like you lack originality?

One Twitter user, @/deutzlyaaa, recently tweeted out, “Wait… does Christy Ng’s recent patterns feel like “similar but no”? It’s like they’re saying “if you want to wear a branded (handbag) but can’t afford it, don’t worry you have us.” The tweet is in reference to the recent designs released by the brand, which seemed to have taken inspiration from luxury brands such as Goyard and Dior.

The tweet had others in agreement, with many saying they had also realised the similarities in the designs. Some even said the copying was so blatant that it seemed intentional to trick people. Others lamented that the Christy Ng brand lost its identity. One Twitter user mentioned that their previous designs were better in comparison to the current ones but also pointed out that the brand often repeats their designs.

While the exact reason for the similarity is unknown, the inspired designs could be the brand’s take on current trends in the fashion industry. Previously, oil giant Petronas got called out by netizens for plagiarising a tote bag design from local brand Oh Sebenar. Petronas got a lot of heat for the similar design but netizens also noted that original Oh Sebenar tote bags are trending amongst fashion fans, which could explain the similarity.

The fashion label has yet to comment about the similarity in their designs – but what do you think about this issue? Do you think this is plagiarism or just the brand capitalising on what’s popular in the fashion world?
