It’s time to get naked! No, we aren’t talking about you, but the beauty products you buy. You know those expensive and attractive packaging that you’re constantly obsess about, completely oblivious about the fact that it does more damage to the environment than it does good to yourself. Yes, those need to go!

Starting from 1st July, Lush Malaysia is launching their annual #NakedSwapChallenge in order to raise awareness of the excessive use of plastic in the packaging of beauty products. In conjunction with the No Plastic July movement, Lush intends to promote the Lush Naked concept and eliminate product packaging, encouraging more sustainable and environmental-friendly Lush products.

What is the Lush Naked concept, you may ask? Following the literal meaning of the term ‘naked’, Lush products are stripped off from their packaging and placed bare on display in Lush stores. The concept encourages the reduction of plastic usage in packaging and inspire customers to not look at what’s on the outside but focus on what’s on the inside—the ingredients of the products.

“We went back to basics at the start of Lush – we stripped away the packaging and we put larger numbers of highly knowledgeable staff on the shop floor, to bring back the art of conversation and specialised service,” says Mark Constantine, Lush co-founder.

To join in the #NakedSwapChallenge, this is what you have to do. Record an unboxing or Lush haul video sharing about the ingredients, benefits and storage instructions of the Lush products you’ve received. Upload the video your Instagram account with the hashtag #NakedSwapChallenge and tag Lush at @malaysia.lush.

By reducing the need for packaging, Lush intends to practice personal consultations by investing more in staff and training to cater better to the customers’ needs. Additionally, Lush has come up with their new #LushLabs app that uses a feature called Lush Lens, providing detailed information of the products ingredients rather than having customers read them from the labels.

Interestingly, Lush products are made from self-preserving chemicals and do not contain water. Bacteria, yeast and mould find it hard to flourish in a waterless environment thus, making it microbiologically stable. They really thought of everything! The only downside, the products are only available in stores as they are not fit for the warm weather.

From hair care to skin care, Lush offers a variety of shampoo bars, pressed conditioners, cleansing balm and facial soap for shiny hair and soothing skin. That’s not all! There’s also massage bars, body conditioners and deodorant for a refreshing full-body Lush bathing experience. Don’t forget the pumice power foot scrub for exfoliation leaving you with softer heels and feet. All in solid bar forms!

Play your part in saving the environment and embark on your sustainable journey before it’s too late. Get Naked with Lush now and go plastic-free for a whole month!
