Devastating news came out of Perak this morning after the MYDIN Hypermarket outlet in Manjoi caught fire yesterday night (10th March). According to reports, the fire broke out at around 6.45pm and quickly spread to the rest of the store.

Assistant Director (Operations) of the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, said the department received an emergency call at 7.09pm. He said, “The Fire and Rescue Department received a call stating that smoke was seen in the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) switch room before the fire broke out on the upper floor (of the building).” Firefighters from the Ipoh Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene at around 7.25pm.

According to Perak Fire and Rescue Department Director Sayani Saidon, firefighters were able to bring the fire at the MYDIN outlet under control as of midnight. A total of 123 personnel worked to extinguish the fire. Sayani said that the department has not received any reports about casualties, adding that all staff and workers were vacated from the building as soon as the fire broke out. The department is still waiting on the forensics report to determine the cause of the fire.

Following the devastation, MYDIN Malaysia released a statement on their social media page to announce the closure of their Manjoi outlet due to the fire. According to the notice, MYDIN Manjoi will be temporarily closed beginning 11th March until an undetermined date. Meanwhile, customers can visit the MYDIN Meru Raya or MYDIN Gopeng outlets to continue shopping for daily necessities. The retail chain also extended its apologies to customers for any inconvenience caused.
