More celebrities have been added to the Blockout 2024 list that went viral recently. Thankfully, Malaysia’s number 1 singer Dato Sri Siti Nurhaliza was not among those listed. The vocalist has been very vocal about her political stance regarding the ongoing genocide in Gaza and has previously addressed certain issues regarding her connection with a certain music label.

When asked about her thoughts on the Blockout list, the singer eloquently reminded netizens to be more civilised and avoid aggressively attacking other people on social media. Unfortunately, her words were misinterpreted and caused a stir among netizens. Here’s what happened:

During a recent interview with Hiburan Glam, Siti Nurhaliza refused to comment on the celebs that were being boycotted because of the Blockout list. Instead, she gave a reminder to her fellow Muslims to always practice what they preach saying, “Be civilised when reprimanding others. Remember what our religion taught us. Just because you don’t like something, you don’t need to start cursing or humiliating others.”

However, her statement was misinterpreted as another popular Malay publication took part of her quote out of context and used it as their headline which read, “If you don’t like something, just block and be quiet.” The writeup obviously upset many and they all expressed their disappointment in Siti. The “Wanita” songstress quickly addressed everyone’s concerns on Instagram Story and reposted the interview video along with a lengthy caption.

“I specifically remembered what I said in the interview and how I said it. Unfortunately, what was published was completely different and I was criticised based on people’s interpretation,” she explained. The 45-year-old further listed down all her contributions to providing aid to the people in Gaza. Shortly after making her post, the news outlet that posted the misleading headline issued an apology to the singer.

As seen in the screenshot above, the editor of the publication sent a message to Siti’s management to apologise for the headline and assured that the social media postings and the article had been removed from the website. “We acknowledge the viral issue and will be more mindful of the things we publish in the future,” they wrote. Fortunately for the publication, Siti decided to forgive them and let bygones be bygones.
