Music Spotlight: 5 Tracks & MVs From Malaysia’s Burgeoning Indie & Alt-Rock Scene

If you’ve been listening to Malaysia’s indie and alt-rock music lately, you’ll have heard a mix of honest feelings, local pride, and new sounds. The songs talk about real-life struggles, like pressure from society and tricky relationships, all with a local twist.

Here’s a quick look at some cool tracks and videos that skillfully reflect what young people are feeling today.

Insiden Ruang Legar – “Semesta Menggila”

YouTube video

Ever felt like the universe is messing with your head? “Semesta Menggila” spins that chaos into pure alt-rock gold, with experimental edges crafted by the dynamic songwriting duo Arif Roduan and Amir Hamzah. Directed by Dollhouse Films, the music video plunges you into the emotional rollercoaster of a struggling musician – imagine juggling a music degree, but still being stuck in a 9-to-5 grind just to get by.

What sets this MV apart is its raw honesty. The visuals vividly capture the tug-of-war between light and shadow, dreams and reality, showing the protagonist’s fight to stay true to his art. Every flicker of hope and pang of frustration hits like a gut punch – reflecting the quiet grind of countless local artists behind the scenes. With slick yet intimate production, it’s impossible not to root for his journey.

LUST – “Ever Before”

YouTube video

LUST’s “Ever Before” is a synth-soaked dream drifting from their latest album TUGU. Directed by Syahmi Norsan with Izmer Hamdan behind the camera and editing, the video stars Nadhir Nasar and Firdaus Karim as two men caught in a quiet in-between – not quite arriving, not fully leaving.

Instead of hunting for neat answers, “Ever Before” leans into ambiguity. It captures that suspended moment when emotions linger after change – when you’ve moved on in theory, but your heart hasn’t quite caught up. Set against shimmering synths and nostalgia-tinged production, LUST paints a delicate portrait of drifting away from the past and gently starting anew.

Loko – “Pemuda”

YouTube video

Loko’s “Pemuda,” from their new album, nails the messy truth of growing up under pressure. Using sharp metaphors, the song tells the story of a young man trying to escape the mounting stress and pain inside. It’s about hiding struggles, feeling worn out, and coping solo.

The track digs deep into the hard realities many young Malaysians face – feeling lost, overwhelmed, and desperate for relief. Wrapped in Loko’s emotional alt-rock sound, “Pemuda” offers an honest glimpse into the messy process of becoming an adult.

Pitahati – “Ana Yang Punya (1 Ringgit 2 Ringgit)”

YouTube video

Pitahati’s single “Ana Yang Punya (1 Ringgit 2 Ringgit),” released earlier this year, serves a catchy yet sharp reminder about power misuse and entitlement. The band insists it’s not about anyone specific but stresses the need for responsibility.

Musically, the track shows a lighter, more playful side of Pitahati without losing their edge. They admit it leans into classic rock vibes, though any nods to The Doors’ Riders on the Storm are purely coincidental.

Raksar – “Tumpor”

YouTube video

Coming at you straight from Perak with pure punk energy, Raksar’s “Tumpor” is an experimental punk anthem drenched in local flavour. Sung in the Perak dialect, it adds a unique cultural texture to their fuzzy, raw sound.

The video’s simple, intimate shoot shows off the band’s fierce, no-frills rock ‘n’ roll personality. “Tumpor” celebrates local identity and language, proving regional dialects pack as much punch in music as in casual banter. The documentary-style video feels like chilling with your best mates jamming, bringing back warm nostalgia for Rock Oo vibes in a fresh, modern way.
