Many Malaysians prefer having ‘better-looking’ photos of themselves on their official identification documents such as their identity cards (ICs), driver’s licenses and passports, leading some to utilise Artificial Intelligence (AI) to beautify their pictures.
Due to this, the public is now being informed not to use photos generated or modified using AI technology for the purpose of applying for a Malaysian passport.

According to the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM), the use of AI photos or the submission of false information in a passport application is a serious offence and can be subject to action under the Passport Act 1966 (Act 150).
They explained that applicants must ensure that photos submitted are original, clear and comply with the specifications set by the immigration authorities.
“Any false photos or information submitted may cause the application to be rejected and the applicant may be subject to action in accordance with existing legal provisions,” JIM shared.
Identity verification purposes
JIM further urged the public to ensure passport photos have even lighting, a clear face without shadows and have not been modified using any AI applications or technology, as the use of real photos is very important in ensuring identity verification processes run smoothly and to avoid any elements of fraud.
“Use real photos. Avoid AI manipulation.”
