We’ve got fantastic news for Malaysians living in Johor Bahru who are working in Singapore.

It has been announced that a new cross-border MRT system connecting the 2 countries is currently in the works and is expected to begin passenger service by December 2024. The rail service will be known as the Singapore-JB Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.

When it launches, the transportation will run through a high bridge across the Straits of Johor to connect to Singapore. The details were disclosed yesterday (Monday, 31st July) following the 13th meeting between Singapore’s Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Khaw Boon Wan and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

According to reports, Singapore’s RTS terminal will be located at the Woodlands North station, along the Thomson-East Coast MRT line. Malaysia’s RTS terminal, on the other hand, will be at Bukit Chagar. It was also revealed that the existing KTMB Tebrau shuttle will cease operations when the Singapore-JB RTS starts, since more travel options will be made available.

The Singapore-JB RTS is also expected to carry up to 10,000 passengers in each direction every hour. This will definitely help reduce traffic congestions!
