It’s Official: #FiftyShadesOfGrey Will Not Be Shown In Malaysia

It’s official. The film adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey” will be not be shown in Malaysia and no, we are not surprised by this at all. Don’t say you didn’t see it coming, especially when you’re well aware of the fact that “Fifty Shades of Grey” is an erotic romance movie.

At least, consider yourself lucky because David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” managed to be shown in Malaysia last year, though some of the obscene scenes were censored or removed.

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, “Fifty Shades of Grey” is an erotic romance movie adapted from the novel of the same name by British author E. L. James. The novel is notable for its erotic content that featured sexual practices involving bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism (BDSM). However, the plot mainly centres on the life of Anastasia Steele, a college graduate who falls for Christian Grey, a young business magnate.

For the movie adaptation, Jamie Dornan has joined the cast as Christian Grey while Anastasia Steele will be played by American actress Dakota Johnson. The movie also stars Victor Rasuk as Jose, Eloise Mumford as Kate, Marcia Gay Harden as Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey and Luke Grimes as Elliot Grey. As the movie also featured some explicitly erotic scenes, it has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) last month. Just recently, the movie has been given an 18 certificate by the British Board of Film Classification

“Fifty Shades of Grey” was originally slated for release in Malaysia on 12th Feb 2015 but local distributor United International Pictures announced that this movie will no longer be showing in Malaysia. No further details were given about the announcement but it is widely believed that the film was not permitted to be shown by the local film censorship board due to the excessive amount of erotic scenes. It is unclear whether the movie will be shown in Singapore but a R21 rating is expected.

Slated for release in North American cinemas on 13th February 2015, “Fifty Shades of Grey” will premiere as a Berlinale Special Gala at the Berlin Film Festival on 11th February.
