Movie Tea: “Captain America: Brave New World” Enjoys US$100 Million+ Debut; “Goonies 2” Confirmed!

80s kids – cinephiles in particular – are eating well this month, after news broke that iconic movies and legendary stars from that decade are making a return to the big screen.

From Harrison Ford and Anthony Mackie climbing the cinematic leaderboard, to an upcoming reunion at the Goon Docks area – here’s movie tea that’ll take you back to the present and the future.

“Captain America: Brave New World” Scores Big Despite Middling Reviews

It’s been a while since we last had an MCU film – to the point that seeing one in theatres is like a breath of fresh air. Sure, we saw Deadpool team up with Wolverine, but it was still quite a shock to realise that we only had one MCU movie for 2024. But it’s 2025, which means that the highly-anticipated “Captain America: Brave New World” is finally here.

The film sees Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson donning the iconic Captain America shield and fighting against new rising threats. The film is almost a return to form in terms of a typical MCU film, further expanding the plot of the shared universe. Unfortunately, however, the film received barely passable reviews, with IGN saying that it’s “neither brave, nor all that new…”

Yet, for all the negativity it has received, the film was able to earn more than US$100 million in its domestic debut alone. That is a lot of money, but it’s far from Marvel’s highest debut. It comes in fourth, just behind 2018’s “Black Panther” (US$242 million), 2016’s “Deadpool” (US$152 million), and 2023’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (US$120 million).

The film is a political thriller, wherein Sam tries to prevent a global disaster following the election of Harrison Ford’s President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Many have likened it to 2014’s “Captain America: Winter Soldier,” as the prequel also explored political nuances in an entertaining and action-packed way – though “Captain America: Brave New World” does nothing to differentiate itself from it (hence IGN’s comments). Despite it all, it has been confirmed that Mackie will reprise his role for “Avengers: Doomsday.”

It’s no secret that MCU is having quite the “hit or miss” situation with their recent films, but the creatives behind the film remain adamant in staying the course. However, it’s fair to say that moviegoers are slowly getting over their superhero fatigue – although the film could have been better, it still received a significant payout during its opening weekend and is expected to rake in a little more before it runs its course.

“The Goonies” Sequel Now In The Works

What a time to be an 80s kid in 2025! It has just been confirmed that Warner Bros. has greenlit the production of the sequel to “The Goonies” film, after almost 40 years since the original hit theatres. Variety reported that the entertainment company hired Potsy Ponciroli (known for his work in “Old Henry”) to pen a script for the film. Additionally, it was also confirmed that Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin Entertainment, alongside Chris Columbus, the writer for the original “Goonies” script.

For those who are unfamiliar with the original film, it follows a young Josh Brolin (Thanos/Cable in the MCU), Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee from the LoTR trilogy), Corey Feldman (Edgar Frog from the “Lost Boys” franchise), Ke Huy Quan (Waymond Wang from “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once”), and Martha Plimpton (Yelena from “Frozen 2”), who discover an ancient map to hidden treasure. What follows is a daring adventure to help uncover this treasure in order to save the kids’ homes.

“The Goonies,” which Spielberg produced and Richard Donner directed, brought in US$125 million worldwide at the box office on a US$19 million budget. It has since become a cult classic, and in 2017, the Library of Congress decided to include it in the National Registry.

Little is known about the sequel, let alone if the original cast will once again share the big screen, but what we do know is that they are excited for the on-screen reunion. In an interview at the red carpet premiere for his latest movie, “Love Hurts,” Quan reunited with Feldman and went on to address the (at the time, unconfirmed) news of sequel. “It’s one of the most asked questions in my life,” Quan said. “I would love for it to happen.”

Feldman also decided to chime in, demanding a reunion. “Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die… There’s hope.”
