Well, this we didn’t expect.
Kurt Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, had an interview with Rolling Stone magazine ahead of the release of “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck“, a new HBO documentary based on her late father.
Frances, now 22 years old and a visual artist, spoke publicly for the first time about her father; life after his death; her complex relationship with her mother, Courtney Love; and of course, the new documentary film.
Ahem. Well, sorry to anyone out there who expected Frances Bean Cobain to be a raging Nirvana fan – because she’s not.
She revealed exclusively to Rolling Stone:
I don’t really like Nirvana that much (grins). Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I’m more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre (laughs). The grunge scene is not what I’m interested in. But “Territorial Pissings” (on Nevermind) is a fucking great song. And “Dumb” (on In Utero) – I cry every time I hear that song. It’s a stripped-down version of Kurt’s perception of himself – of himself on drugs, off drugs, feeling inadequate to be titled the voice of a generation.
When asked if she felt awkward as a teen, for not being interested in Nirvana, she said it would have been more awkward if she had been a fan.
She explained:
I was around 15 when I realized he was inescapable. Even if I was in a car and had the radio on, there’s my dad. He’s larger than life. and our culture is obsessed with dead musicians. We love to put them on a pedestal. If Kurt had just been another guy who abandoned his family in the most awful way possible . . . But he wasn’t. He inspired people to put him on a pedestal, to become St. Kurt. He became even bigger after he died than he was when he was alive. You don’t think it could have gotten any bigger. But it did.
Frances, who acted as executive producer on the documentary, also told the magazine that working on the film also helped bridge her rocky relationship with her mother, Courtney Love.
Meanwhile, “Montage of Heck” is set to premiere on HBO on 4th May, roughly a month after the 21st anniversary of Cobain’s death. “Montage of Heck” is an authorised documentary on the late musician Kurt Cobain, from his early days in Aberdeen, Washington to his success and downfall with the grunge band Nirvana.
The film will not only feature dozens of Nirvana songs and performances as well as unreleased Cobain originals, it will also include never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork and photography, plus materials from his personal archives, family archives, and songbooks.

Co-produced by HBO Documentary Films and Universal Pictures International Entertainment Content Group, this will be the first documentary to be made with the cooperation of Cobain’s family.
