Malaysia has been steadily getting used to more relaxed SOPs as the country slowly transited to an “endemic phase”. Yet, the pandemic still left marks, such as the ever-persistent presence of masks and of course, the instinctive urge to check-in to areas with MySejahtera.

However, starting 1st May, this will all change. Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin recently announced that masks will no longer be required for outdoor settings. Additionally, there is no longer a need to check-in to premises with MySejahtera!

We’re sure you’re about to start celebrating, but this doesn’t mean all caution should be dropped. As stated, masks are only no longer required in outdoor settings. If you’re indoors, like on a public transport or in a building, masks are still required. However, face masks can be removed indoors when eating, exercising alone, giving a speech or performing on stage.

Wearing a mask outside is still encouraged if the area is crowded, or if you are a high-risk individual. For clarification, high-risk individuals involve senior citizens, the immunocompromised, and those with comorbidities. Additionally, the Ministry of Health stressed wearing a mask in these areas: Ramadan Bazaars, pasar malam (night markets) and stadiums. Also, please do wear a mask if you have symptoms.

While you may not need to check into premises with MySejahtera anymore, you’ll likely still need the app. According to the Ministry of Health, entry to premises are permitted, regardless of your vaccination status. However, there will still be checks on your Covid-19 health status. This is because COVID-19 positive cases are still not allowed to enter premises.

Aside from making masks optional outdoors and rolling back on the MySejahtera check-ins, the Minister of Health had more to add. For those who tested positive for Covid-19, they can be released from quarantine earlier if they test negative by Day 4. Also, if you’re a fully vaccinated traveller entering Malaysia, pre-departure and on-arrival tests are no longer required.

Well, this is certainly a reason to look forward to May! Perhaps one day the world will return to what we remember it to be. For now, this is a step in its direction.
