Malaysians might see the split of the top mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie (陳堂傑) and Toh Ee Wei (杜頤溈) following reports of a rift. Their future will be decided later today (24th March 2025, Monday) at the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) meeting.
The two shuttlers sparked speculations of a strained partnership after their first-round loss at the All-England tournament in Birmingham two weeks ago. Adding to the rumours are reports of Tang Jie and Ee Wei suddenly withdrawing from the upcoming Asian Championships in Ningbo, China. In addition, the pair also didn’t participate in the recent Swiss Open tournament that ended yesterday (23rd March 2025, Sunday).

Badminton fans also noted that Ee Wei recently deleted all photos of her and her partner from her social media accounts. BAM acting president Datuk V. Subramaniam confirmed a rift between the two players. However, he said the association would only decide on the pair’s future after today’s performance task force committee meeting. Nevertheless, Subramaniam remains optimistic that Tang Jie and Ee Wei could resolve their internal issues amicably.
In the meantime, former All-England champion Tan Boon Heong reportedly offered to help the pair with their issue, encouraging Tang Jie and Ee Wei to mend their differences. Former Malaysia mixed doubles player Goh Liu Ying also spoke about the matter, saying it’s normal for teammates to face communication issues. She added that the pair needs time to recuperate and work out their differences.

Both Tang Jie and Ee Wei have yet to comment on the issue. However, badminton fans continue to support the Malaysia mixed pair, hoping the rift is temporary. Some pointed out that the other pairs, notably Nur Izzuddin and Goh Sze Fei, have also faced similar issues but were able to reconcile and come back stronger, so they’re hoping the same for Tang Jie and Ee Wei. Others said the two will likely get back on their feet after a well-needed break.
Whatever happens, we hope for the best for our two national athletes. What are your thoughts on this?
