“Melayu Goreng”: Netizens React To Hilarious Restaurant Sign At Sungei Wang Plaza

One way for a business to attract customers is by having a catchy name or perhaps a striking sign displayed above the store’s entrance. There was once a vendor at a Ramadan bazaar who went viral due to the questionable phrasing on their banner.

The owner of this eatery at a shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur may not have originally intended for their sign to be misinterpreted, but it certainly caught the attention of many. Here’s what we mean:

On Thursday (20th February), Twitter user Fayyadh Jaafar posted a photo of what appears to be an indoor restaurant he came across during his recent visit to JUMPA, Sungei Wang Plaza. What caught his attention about this particular outlet was that the sign read, “Melayu Goreng,” which can also be translated as “Fried Malay”. The mall visitor then proceeded to humorously caption the post, “Stop the murder of Malay people to cook Fried Malay.”

Unsurprisingly, the post garnered the attention of many Malaysians, all joining in on the joke. Many suggested that there was no issue with this, as everyone has “eaten other races and nationalities,” such as Nasi Goreng Cina and Nasi Goreng USA, citing equality. Others commented that it was time for Malay people to rise up from the stove to fight against discrimination. A few joked that the owner of the stall may be a cannibal.

For those who may be curious (or, for some reason, concerned), the “Melayu Goreng” sign actually means that the tenant specialises in fried Malay dishes, or that the food is prepared by Malay chefs for predominantly Malay customers. Now that it has gone viral, will you be trying the food at this place?
