Rappers are both loved and hated, mostly for the topics they discuss in their music. While some feel they have the freedom to rap about it, others think some topics shouldn’t be broached. And, for good reason.
Unfortunately, it seems the lines have blurred for Taiwanese rapper MC Hotdog (姚中仁). The song “Ladyboy” from his most recent album, “姚中二” has caused a stir, thanks to its bold lyrics. Apparently, the rapper saw fit to mock Hong Kong artists Gloria Tang (邓紫棋) aka G.E.M., and Angelababy (杨颖).
MC Hotdog last impressed netizens with his performance on Chinese variety show “Call Me By Fire (披荆斩棘的哥哥)”. However, any goodwill he might have gained from there may have gone down the drain. Most netizens were shocked and upset with his verbal attacks on Gloria Tang, although he did not mention her by name.
According to them, MC Hotdog’s “Ladyboy” lyrics of “I knew you before you had plastic surgery (你没整形前，我就认识你),” were a clear stab at Gloria. The singer-song writer has apparently been rumoured to have done plastic surgery before. MC Hotdog’s lyrics also had the line “Are you my Angelababy? Or are you despicable?” He’d apparently chosen Angelababy’s name as it rhymes with the word “despicable” in Mandarin.
His casual mention of the two artists in his lyrics had netizens rushing to defend them. Some called him despicable and claimed his actions were disgusting. One asked “Is respecting women difficult?” Others weren’t happy with his disregard for the female artists in his pursuit to make his lyrics rhyme. However, there were comments which claimed netizens were being overly sensitive. “So what if their names are mentioned?” one challenged. “Who (gets) hurt? Is it illegal? Everyone has an attitude, (are they) so fragile?”
Neither Angelababy nor Gloria have openly remarked on MC Hotdog’s song. Although, Angelababy’s agency has supposedly skimmed over the issue. MC Hotdog himself has been keeping his head down since the incident. Regardless, fans are still flocking to his new album for a listen.
