Are y’all ready for a new shopping hotspot?

MMO reported that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will be demolishing the popular Jalan Melayu Bazaar in Masjid India and turn it into a modern shopping haven similar London’s Oxford Street.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Amin Nordin Abd Aziz felt that the bazaar area needed a makeover because “the place was ageing and looked shabby”. “I decided that the bazaar must go and be replaced with a modern concept that is open and bright, something akin to the pushcart kiosk that can be moved around,” he told The Star.

DBKL had previously proposed the overhaul 6 years ago. However, due to disagreements from traders and shop owners, coupled with the lack of mapping archive of underground utility cables, the plan failed to take off. There’s been an ongoing battle where shop owners refuse to relocate while traders refusing to move out. Amin Nordin acknowledged that there needs to be a compromise in order for the contractors to start work immediately.

This time around, DBKL insists that they’re forging ahead with the demolition and expects to clear the area by December. If you still have plans to buy cheap traditional items (attires, snacks, and textiles), you may want to visit the place soon.
