Thor fans, the moment you all have been waiting for is here.
The identity of the female Thor has finally been revealed in the latest issue of the Thor comic series written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Russell Dauterman.
Comic book giant Marvel first announced that the iconic Thor comic series would feature a female Thor back in July 2014. This was then followed by an announcement about Steve Rogers/Captain America being replaced with a new African-American Captain America.
In the comics, Odinson goes on a quest to find out the identity of the new female Thor through his specific list of female friends, family, and former lovers. Fans of the comics then speculated that Thor’s sister Angela could be the new incarnation of the hero. However, before the speculations ran wild, Aaron decided to get ahead of any leaks by revealing that the Goddess of Thunder, whose identity remains a mystery since her first appearance, is in fact Dr. Jane Foster.
Foster, who was portrayed by Natalie Portman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is the former lover of Thor Odinson. Unfortunately, she is currently battling breast cancer.
Regarding Foster’s current condition, Aaron said:
Jane Foster has been part of the Thor comics and the Thor mythology from almost the very beginning. The very act of picking up this hammer, of becoming Thor, is killing her. Where we go from here is the real story.
Despite the revelation, she is still going to be Thor for a while, as she will be joining the new team of Avengers during the ongoing Secret Wars crossover. It is unclear how her future will look once the fighting is done.
According to Aaron, the new “Thor” comic series has been a Top 10 book for Marvel since its release in October:
Most of the new readers seem to be women and young girls, which is great. You’re seeing more and more comics that appeal to that audience.
Aaron also said the popularity of the new Thor has also increased his recognition with non-comics fans. “Usually when I say I write comics for a living, I kind of get blank stares,” he said. “Now, when I say I write Thor, they say, “You’re the lady Thor guy?” Yup. That’s me.”
The new issue of the “Thor” series goes on sale in comic book stores and digitally on 13th May (Wednesday).
