We’ve all heard of celebrities who fall in love with Malaysia’s charm, but few make it official like Wakin Chau (周華健), also known as Emil Chau. The Mandopop legend recently delighted fans in Kuala Lumpur when he revealed that he had bought a house in the country, turning his long-held dream into reality. The singer now joins the growing list of stars investing in Malaysia, including Hong Kong actor Bosco Wong, who reportedly purchased four properties here.
The announcement came during his concert on 18th October, where the 64-year-old singer-songwriter shared his affection for Malaysia and its people. Known for his warm personality and heartfelt ballads, the singer added a personal touch to his performance by joking that he could soon be living right next door to some of his fans.

“I’ve always wanted a house here since I was young. Back then, I told myself that when I grew up, I would buy a house here. After so many years, no salesperson ever came to me, but I’ve bought one already,” Wakin told the cheering audience, as reported by Sin Chew Daily. His revelation drew loud applause from concertgoers, who were clearly touched by the singer’s sentimental connection to the country.
The singer went on to say that since purchasing a home in Malaysia, he no longer feels like an outsider when speaking with local fans. “Who knows, maybe you live right next door to me! I may bump into you while buying groceries,” he joked, earning laughter from the crowd. He also expressed gratitude to the concert organisers for their hospitality, admitting that he always puts on weight during his visits, thanks to irresistible local favourites like bak kut teh and pig stomach pepper soup.

A household name in the Mandopop world since the 1980s, Wakin’s illustrious career spans over four decades. He rose to fame writing theme songs for beloved martial arts dramas such as “The Legend of the Condor Heroes (射鵰英雄傳)” and “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils (天龙八部)”, before his soothing voice and soulful ballads like “Friends (朋友)” and “The Flowery Heart (花心)” cemented his legacy across Asia.
His Kuala Lumpur concert was part of an ongoing tour celebrating his musical journey, offering fans a nostalgic evening filled with classic hits and heartfelt stories. But the night’s biggest surprise wasn’t just the music; it was the moment the singer officially became a part of Malaysia’s community, one home and one smile at a time.
