Given the current state of the Malaysian economy, it’s no surprise that many locals are considering switching out their current jobs for one that pays more. However, not all higher-paying roles will offer the best benefits.

In a post by the Instagram account ‘Malaysian Pay Gap’, an unnamed Malaysian asked netizens for career advice, saying they’re torn between sticking with their current job or accepting a seemingly better offer. The person shared that their current Technical Support job pays RM5,000 and provides 19 days of annual leave. However, the job offers no career progression nor opportunities for learning and development.

On the other hand, the new Wintel Engineer job offer the candidate received would pay RM6,000, but it is a contract job. The role will only provide 12 days of annual leave with no other known benefits. However, the Malaysian said they will be able to learn in-depth skills relating to Wintel and that there is a growing demand for the role in the career market.

Many netizens shared their response to the anonymous sender, with most saying the new offer isn’t as good as it seems. Most comments brought up the point that contract workers are often the first to get laid off so there is a higher risk than sticking to their permanent role. Many also said that the RM1,000 increment isn’t worth it as the person is getting fewer days off and won’t get a proper work-life balance.

However, some said the right choice depends on what the Malaysian wants. One comment said that if the person is open to accepting risks and uncertainty, the new offer might be a good choice as it offers a chance to upskill. Another netizen said the person can choose the new offer if it allows for a better learning opportunity than their current position. However, they also recommend picking up the same skill set by learning part-time so they don’t lose their current role or the opportunity to learn.
