The Malaysian entertainment scene mourns the passing of a prominent figure in the industry. Penny Phan Poh Choo (彭宝珠), known for mentoring many local child stars in the 1990s, has passed away. She was 72.
According to reports, Penny passed away on 17th June 2026 (Wednesday) due to kidney failure caused by an infection following a bowel surgery. Her daughter said the entertainment mogul was in good health despite her age. However, she was rushed to the hospital on 29th May 2026 (Friday) due to abdominal pains.

Penny underwent surgery for her sudden illness and was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU). She was later discharged and allowed to recuperate at home. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting a second emergency surgery. Penny later fell into a coma and passed away a few days later at the hospital.
The family has shared details about the funeral service, which has begun and will proceed until 20th June 2026 (Saturday). At the same time, many of Penny’s friends and mentees from the local entertainment scene have taken to social media to share their condolences and tributes to the late entertainment mogul.
As the former director of Weiyang Entertainment (威扬娱乐), now known as Star Entertainment Group, Penny has helped launch the careers of many homegrown singers and child stars. She also helped organise shows for both local and international stars, including Malaysian singer Zhuang Xuezhong (庄学忠) and Hong Kong comedian group Super Trio.
Given her contributions to the entertainment industry, it’s obvious that many were affected by the news of her passing. Singer Raymond Ng (黄铭德) shared a tribute on his Facebook page, thanking Penny for her guidance as a mentor and friend. Singer Catherine Soon (孙艺绫) also shared a post on Facebook, remembering how Penny helped build her musical career.
While she was more of a “behind-the-scenes” figure, there’s no doubt that Penny Phan helped shape the local entertainment industry. Her contributions will be remembered for years to come. We extend our condolences to her family, and may they find solace during this difficult time.
