Nowadays, it’s simultaneously easier and harder to break into the entertainment industry. Back in the day, the only way for anyone to get their big break in music, acting, or dancing is through big auditions or being scouted by talent agents.
Sadly, with the help of technology and social media, you can go viral just by posting your videos despite not having any foundation in the arts that you’re pursuing. It’s even sadder when production companies would prioritise popularity or beauty over talent and FINAS is under fire for doing just that. Here’s what some of our local actors have to say:
One of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS)’s board of directors, actress and producer Datuk A. Aida recently made a controversial statement saying that she prioritises an actor’s good looks over their talent as she believes talent can be taught and developed. This sparked outrage among Malaysian creatives, especially actors.
A few have voiced their response to the producer’s statement. Actor Amerul Affendi tweeted his opinion on the issue sarcastically saying that all acting courses and studies should be dissolved as they’re basically pointless now because of what Datuk A. Aida said. He then stated, “It’s not good to scam these students who invested their time and money to receive their education [in acting].”
Earlier today, the 36-year-old demanded FINAS respond to the producer’s controversial statement as many have expressed their concerns over this issue. Joining him in this fight is fellow actor Azhan Rani who posted a video on his Instagram of his acceptance speech when he won an award for his antagonist role in “Nur” at the 2019 DFKL. “I’m here to represent those with exceptional talents but didn’t have the ‘complete package’, to keep on fighting and striving,” he said in the video.
Molek FM’s announcer Mat Dan also shared his thoughts on the FINAS producer’s statement. In an IG story, the British public figure wrote that looks aren’t everything and that people should focus more on the actors’ skills and talent in giving the best performance.
FINAS has yet to release a response to Datuk A. Aida’s statement. Previously, the actress told mStar that she would prioritise looking for actors who have both looks and talent. However, the producer then told Harian Metro that she would also prioritise buff and young actors for main roles in her shows.
