In Malaysia, it’s not enough to pass the driver’s test to get your driving licence. You’re only properly approved on the road once the P-sticker signifying you are a “pelajar” (student) is removed. However, while young Malaysians dream of getting it off the vehicle, elsewhere, people want it on.

Last year, there was a surprising craze for the P-sticker on Taobao, China’s largest e-commerce platform. It bewildered Malaysians since there was no real significant meaning for the buyers. Well, even with the recent promotion for the stickers, some find it expensive. Yet somehow, it’s still selling well!

News of it being sold popped up around October last year, with good reviews too. Six months later, it is reported that an average of 56 pieces are being sold per month for 28.99 yuan (~RM19.30). However, the online store recently decided to hold a promotion for the stickers and is offering deals. With a coupon, one can buy two stickers for 19.99 yuan (~RM13.31).

Well, most Malaysians would be unwilling to pay that much for the sticker. But netizens disagree. Some have willingly bought these stickers regardless of the price for various reasons. Apparently, the most favoured reason is because it can be used to decorate their cars.

“Look! Simple decoration!” one comment happily exclaimed. Others would also gush about how good it looks on their cars. One netizen in particular agreed that the price was expensive. However, their need to have it outweighed the price. “(It’s) is not cost-effective, but the feelings give me a rush!! Feelings are priceless,” one comment earnestly explained.

Well, who would have thought that these P-stickers would have been so popular overseas? Malaysians might have kept it for nostalgic reasons, but certainly not because its stylish. On the other hand, to each their own, we suppose!
