The air crackled, a collective chorus of over 50,000 hearts sync to the same frantic rhythm of Mayday (五月天) was evident during the “#5525 Live Tour” at National Stadium Bukit Jalil last weekend. Audiences boarded Mayday’s musical time machine, taking a trip down memory lane back to their debut days and journeyed through the different milestones that have defined their music career.
It had been three years since the band last performed in Kuala Lumpur, a fact lead singer Ashin acknowledged with warmth and gratitude. True to their word, Mayday returned bigger and bolder, filling the vast stadium with inventive staging, dazzling visuals, and a setlist that felt both expansive and deeply personal. Opening with high-energy anthems like “OAOA”, “Sun Wu Kong (Monkey King)” and “Cheers”, the night flowed effortlessly into fan favourites including “I Won’t Let You Be Lonely”, “People Life, Ocean Wild” and “Contentment”. Each song landed like a familiar embrace, proof of a bond that time and distance have never weakened.
Hop On The “Mayday Express” Bus

Midway through the show, the gap between band and audience drew closer. Ashin, together with bassist Masa, drummer Guan You, as well as guitarists Stone and Monster took to an open-top “Mayday Express” bus. Circling the stadium, they performed “Love-ing” and “Party Animal”. Fans erupted, phones raised, voices hoarse, as Mayday rolled past them not as untouchable rock stars, but as companions sharing the same joy.
The Song Request Segment brought laughter when Ashin appeared in a pink blazer — the very piece he wore during two infamous onstage tumbles in past concerts. With a grin, he joked, “Let’s see if it’s the jacket’s problem, or mine.” It was a moment that felt quintessentially Mayday: self-aware, playful, and completely unguarded.
A Dream Come True For This Mayday Fan
Several lucky fans in the VIP section were selected to interact with the veteran performers. One of them was RTM reporter Rasyidah Johan (拉丝达). Talking to Ashin face to face, she was visibly overwhelmed. “Am I dreaming? Ashin personally chose me!” she exclaimed.
The multilingual Malaysian shared that this was her ninth Mayday concert, recalling that her very first overseas trip was to watch the band live. “Your song ‘Stubborn’ is my life’s motto. When I face difficulties at work or in life, I think of the lyrics: ‘If I’m not like the rest of the world, then let me be different.’” she told Ashin.
Grateful and emotional, she added, “Thank you for your songs. I’ve been watching your concerts since 2010. Time and time again, when people ask which artist’s concert is the most sincere and worth seeing, I always say Mayday.”
A Proposal In The Middle Of The Music
Not far away, another fan was trembling: for a very different reason. In his pocket, a small box felt heavier than the stadium itself. As Mayday performed “Suddenly Missing You So Badly”, he popped the question and held out a ring. She saw the ring, then his hopeful face, before nodding- a tearful, laughing yes.
Wearing matching yellow shirts, the couple embraced tightly. In the centre of a roaring sea of 55,000 voices, they were suddenly, perfectly alone. For them, this concert marked the first page of a new chapter together.
By the end of the night, the stadium no longer felt like a venue. It became a shared emotional space. Every hoarse cheer, every lyric shouted until voices cracked, was proof of belonging. Mayday didn’t just come to play a show. For a few precious hours, they held the stopwatch on time, creating a sanctuary where a proposal, a lifelong dream, and 55,000 voices formed a tidal wave of collective memory.
