Most people dread disruptions to the LRT or MRT service, especially in the mornings, as it often results in them being late for work. Although weekends are generally less busy than weekdays, such interruptions can still be an inconvenience for those who work on weekends or rely on public transport to travel home.

Unfortunately, our weekend travels are set to change over the next few months, as it was recently announced that the LRT Kelana Jaya Line will undergo an upgrade, which will in turn affect its operating hours. Here’s what we know so far:

In a media briefing held yesterday (Monday, 28th July), Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) Chief Operating Officer, Dr Prodyut Dutt, announced that 10 stations along the Kelana Jaya LRT Line will experience changes to their operating hours. These changes are due to major upgrades scheduled between August and November to improve operational efficiency, safety, and reliability.

“We are going to upgrade all the signals, both software and hardware, because both are obsolete. We are also implementing critical enhancements for cybersecurity and data analytics,” he said during the press conference. Dr Dutt also explained that the upcoming Phase 2 maintenance work will mostly take place during non-operational hours to minimise disruption. However, some stations will still be affected at weekends. The affected stations are:

  • KLCC
  • Ampang Park
  • Damai
  • Dato Keramat
  • Jelatek
  • Setiawangsa
  • Sri Rampai
  • Wangsa Maju
  • Taman Melati
  • Gombak

In short, these stations will begin operation at 9am at weekends, rather that 6am. This is to allow comprehensive testing of the new signalling system before its full implementation. Stations not involved in the testing will operate as usual. Passengers need not worry during the upgrading period as 13 feeder buses, 5 shuttle buses, and 5 vans will be mobilised throughout Phase 2 to facilitate their movement.
