Hygiene issues in restaurants are nothing new to Malaysians. Previously, a customer was left feeling traumatised when he came across a large rat eating a fried chicken at a mamak outlet in Pandan Indah.

Recently, a McDonald’s restaurant in Kota Kemuning, Klang, was ordered to shut down after a photo and a video of a rat sitting at the outlet’s drive-thru counter went viral on social media.

“What the hell? Why is there a rat taking our drive-thru order?! Is this the kind of hygiene you practise?” Facebook user Amy Chew said in her post. After her post went viral, the matter caught the attention of the Health Ministry (MoH). Following that, a notice has been issued for the fast-food chain to close down for a couple of weeks, from 8th to 21st February.

Twitter user Afiq Shari shared a photo of the notice that was posted by MOH at the store’s front door. “This is rare. A McD outlet in Kota Kemuning was ordered to close by the Ministry of Health. This is the first time in my life seeing a fast-food restaurant ordered to close like this,” he remarked.

Many netizens took to social media to share their reactions on the matter. There were also some who claim that the store has always been filthy. One commenter on Facebook named Carol Ow wrote, “It’s about time. This outlet (has been) really dirty for years,” while Mas Laili commented, “Good for all of us. Rude staff and dirty outlet. Let MoH scrutinise them.”

Hopefully this serves as a lesson for other eateries out there.
