It’s almost second nature now to take a photo of something when you see it in real-time so you can post about it on social media later on. However, when this man’s photo caught netizens’ attention, it wasn’t for the reason he had intended.

Twitter user Wahyudi recently shared a photo of the Plaza Alam Sentral mall in Shah Alam. His tweet was to show off the lack of crowd in the local shopping complex, as his caption wrote, “Plaza Alam Sentral is dead, there aren’t as many people as there used to be”. However, when netizens saw the tweet, many were more interested in the photo as it seemed to have a Y2K blur filter.

Many jokingly wondered if the photo was recent because it looked as if it was from a television show from the 2000s. Some even questioned Wahyudi’s phone model because it looked like he captured the image with an old phone. According to the Twitter user, the “filtered” image was because of a broken camera lens – but fortunately, Wahyudi didn’t seem too bothered by the jokes as he was quick to return netizens’ comments with some witty remarks of his own.

The tweet did bring up some other comments from netizens who felt sad about the mall’s current situation. Some agreed that the mall was quite popular amongst the local crowd before the emergence of new malls in the area. Many also began reminiscing about their visits to the mall, noting which store they used to frequent. However, others did mention that Plaza Alam Sentral isn’t completely dead because business often picks up when the locals shop there to prepare for Aidilfitri celebrations.

While unintentional, Wahyudi did put some 2000s vibe to a photo of a very 2000s mall – so maybe he can try doing this with other local malls to ignite more nostalgia amongst netizens.
