If you haven’t noticed by now, many Malaysians have been boycotting international coffee chain Starbucks for its alleged support of Israel in the Palestine-Israel war. However, for many people, the boycott also extends to calling out those who continue to support the brand in any way.

Influencer Nur Afifah was one of those who have received backlash for continuing to purchase from Starbucks – but clarified that it was for a good reason. In her tweet, the influencer wrote, “If you see me buying (Starbucks), I’m just trying to use it up”, referring to her Starbucks Card credit. According to the tweet, Afifah has RM41.00 in her Starbucks Cards, which are non-refundable, so any unused credit will eventually be forfeited.

For Afifah, not using the remaining credit would be considered wasteful, which Muslims believed to be disgraceful. Many agreed with her and supported her decision to use her Starbucks credit. Some also suggested she use the available credit in one go or donate her purchases if she’s uncomfortable consuming Starbucks products. Many also explained that not using the credit would be even worse as the money has already funded the company, which negates the boycott if it remains unused.

However, others have slammed the influencer for still wanting to purchase from Starbucks amidst the ongoing boycott. Some also condemned the suggestion of donating the purchase, saying that any purchase from Starbucks is considered support for Israel. Some netizens even called Afifah selfish, saying that others have terminated their Starbucks Cards regardless of the remaining credit.

Despite the backlash, Afifah stood her ground and clarified that she would put her remaining credit to good use. She mentioned that she understands the criticism of her decision but added that it’s better than letting her money go to waste. Others also agreed that it would be best to use up any remaining Starbucks credit, regardless of the amount, as it would be foolish and against Islamic beliefs to waste money in any form.

What do you think about this situation? Should Afifah use the credit to avoid being wasteful? Or was the criticism from netizens justified?
