Yesterday (Monday, 14th April), it was reported that Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, had died at the age of 85. In an official statement issued by the Institut Jantung Negara (IJN), it was confirmed that the former leader had been admitted to the hospital that morning after experiencing breathing difficulties.
Despite all medical efforts, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. The IJN extended its deepest sympathies to the family of Tun Abdullah, fondly known as Pak Lah, and kindly requested that their privacy be respected during this period of mourning.
“The entire IJN family is united in grief as we mourn the loss of Tun Abdullah. Caring for him in his final hours was both a privilege and an honour. His humility and grace touched many of our staff, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in eternal peace, Al-Fatiha,” said Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohamed Ezani Md Taib, Chief Executive Officer of IJN.
Following the announcement, members of the public expressed their grief, and a number of Malaysian celebrities have also extended their condolences to the family. Among those paying tribute are Biduanita Negara Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza, singers Anuar Zain and Awie, television host Dato’ Aznil Nawawi, actor Alif Satar, and actress Mira Filzah, all of whom shared the news via their respective Instagram Stories.
A state funeral will be held later today (Tuesday, 15 April), according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM). “The funeral prayer will be performed after the zuhur prayer at the National Mosque, and the burial will follow at the Heroes’ Mausoleum, National Mosque, Kuala Lumpur,” the statement read. Members of the public who wish to attend and pay their final respects are required to adhere to the designated dress code.
All buildings within a two-kilometre radius of the National Mosque are instructed to fly the Jalur Gemilang at half-mast until the conclusion of the funeral ceremony. We at Hype Malaysia also extend our deepest condolences to the family of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi during this difficult time.
