K-pop quartet LNGSHOT (롱샷) recently made their debut on 13th January, making them just a couple of weeks old. However, the new idols are already sparking controversy amongst netizens because of one member’s role model.
Earlier this week, netizens were buzzing about LNGSHOT member Woojin (우진) and his controversial choice of role model, Canadian rapper Tory Lanez. The 18-year-old noted that Tory Lanez is his favourite artist on multiple occasions, including in interviews and posts replying to fans. The public also uncovered an old image of Woojin wearing a “Free Tory” shirt, hinting at his support for the rapper.

For context, the shirt is a reference to Tory’s song of the same name, which he released amid his ten-year jail sentence. In 2022, the rapper was convicted of shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the foot in 2020. Many Tory supporters wear the shirt to petition for his release. However, netizens heavily criticise the shirt and any support towards Tory as misogynistic, arguing that it justifies the harm against a woman.
As such, many were shocked to learn that Woojin’s role model is a rapper with a criminal record. Many criticised him and even called for him to apologise. However, some fans defended Woojin, arguing that he might’ve supported Tory for his music and was unaware of his legal issues. Some also brought up a more recent interview where the LNGSHOT member didn’t name anyone as a role model, hinting that he might’ve recognised his mistake.

Woojin isn’t the only idol who has received backlash for supporting problematic male musicians. Earlier this year, KATSEYE’s Daniela was slammed for attending a concert by rapper Playboi Carti, who was accused of domestic abuse and assault. She would later clarify her stance on him, saying she was unaware of his past behaviour. ALLDAY PROJECT’s Tarzzan also sparked backlash for following Chris Brown and Tory Lanez on Instagram.
It’s worth noting that criticising idols for supporting problematic celebrities is a sentiment shared by Korean and international netizens. It’s a shame that LNGSHOT is facing controversy so early in their career, but we hope the boys can overcome this. What are your thoughts on this?
