Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed British stage and screen actor renowned for his defining roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, has died at the age of 86.
He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 28, at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his wife, Sunny Ozell, family, and close friends. His longtime spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed his passing, revealing that Stewart had quietly faced a brief battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
Before achieving global superstardom in Hollywood, Stewart established himself as one of his generation’s premier classical stage actors. Born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire and a lifelong Huddersfield Town fan, in 1940, he overcame a challenging childhood to join the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, spending decades performing in iconic productions including Macbeth, Hamlet, and Antony and Cleopatra.
He later earned a Tony Award nomination for his celebrated 2007 Broadway run in Macbeth and received widespread acclaim performing alongside longtime friend Sir Ian McKellen in Waiting for Godot and No Man’s Land.

Stewart gained worldwide fame when he was cast as Captain Picard in 1987, leading Star Trek: The Next Generation across seven seasons, multiple feature films, and the recent spin-off series Star Trek: Picard. In 2000, he took on another legendary pop culture role as Professor Charles Xavier in Bryan Singer’s X-Men, anchoring the superhero franchise for over two decades across numerous sequels, including Logan and Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010 for his services to drama.

Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world, with Marvel Studios, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and former co-stars—including Hugh Jackman, William Shatner, and Sir Ian McKellen—honoring his immense legacy on both stage and screen. Stewart’s family reflected on his extraordinary grace and impact, while fans across the globe continue to celebrate the life and career of a true titan of acting.
Fans will be able to witness him on the big screen one last time with the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday, with many hoping to see a poignant farewell to both Sir Patrick Stewart and his portrayal of Professor Charles Xavier.
