Raj’s Banana Leaf Bangsar was forced to close down by DBKL after a shocking clip showed the restaurant’s “alleged new staff” washing dishes in a dirty puddle, went viral. This incident has since caused an uproar with Malaysians.
Yesterday (Wednesday, 30th May), reports circulated that Datuk Lee Chong Wei is one of the 3 Company Directors of Raj’s Banana Leaf as listed by the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM).
When contacted by The Star, our national top badminton player denied his role as a shareholder, saying, “No no no. Bukan saya (Not me).” Following that claim, the restaurant issued another statement, insisting that the 3 shareholders in the image (pictured above) have no association with its company and restaurants.
The statement reads:
“Whilst we acknowledge that Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei was previously a director of the company, he had resigned from his directorship prior to the said incident and he was in any event not involved in the day to day operations of our restaurants. We the management of Raj take full and unequivocal responsibility for the said incident on 28-05-2018. Once again, we sincerely apologise to all our customers and the public for our failings and we have taken immediate action to address and rectify these deficiencies and shortcomings in our operations.”
In regards to the temporary closure of Raj’s Banana Leaf, the Malaysian Consumer Association (Maconas) has urged DBKL and the Federal Territories Health Department to revoke the franchise’s premise licence. This is to send a strong message that such actions would not go unpunished.
