MCO: Large Crowd Flock To Kenanga Wholesale City & Plaza Low Yat

The Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) is officially in effect as many sectors reopen for business today (Monday, 4th May).

A long line of people was spotted at Kenanga Wholesale City this morning. The Facebook post, which was uploaded by user Siti Syakhila, has since gone viral with over 23k shares online.

The sight of such a large crowd has sparked worry of another potential cluster for Covid-19 when Malaysia has just started to flatten the curve. Netizens complained that those who showed up at the fashion wholesale mall in Pudu failed to practice social distancing by keeping 1 metre apart.

Sin Chew estimated that there were approximately 300 people at the scene, most of which were Kenanga Wholesale City workers. Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders’ Association chairman, Datuk Ang Say Tee, disclosed that KWC has roughly 800 units.

Before entering, each person was required to follow the Standard Operation Procedures (SOP). “Today is the first day to resume work and the first time to carry out inspection work, so the action is relatively slow, I believe that after 2 days, it will be easier, and would speed up the inspection work,” Datuk Ang said.

Not far from Kenanga Wholesale City, another large crowd was photographed queueing to enter Plaza Low Yat. We are unsure if the majority were workers or there for the purpose of shopping.

Is this an indication that Covid-19 cases are going to shoot up again?

Update (5th May):

If you’re visiting the IT mall, do note that it’s a must to put on a face mask (this rule applies also to staffs working there). Plaza Low Yat will also perform temperature checks at its entrances.

Meanwhile, remember to exercise social distancing 😉
