While nature itself can be otherworldly beautiful, it can also be fatally dangerous. Although we now have the technology to predict natural disasters before they strike, sometimes they can appear out of nowhere with little to no warning leaving behind indescribable devastation.

Late last month, the world witness the eruption of the world’s largest volcano in Hawaii after nearly 40 years of no activity. Last year, our homeland experienced one of the worst floods in many of our states. Today (Friday, 16th December), Malaysia is struck with another tragedy as a giant landslide completely engulfed possibly more than 100 people. Here’s the update:

Around 3am today, a landslide hit a campsite at Father’s Organic Farm in Batang Kali, Selangor. It was reported that the campsite was in the path of the landslide, which was about one acre wide. Authorities rushed to the scene where they estimated about 100 victims when the landslide hit. The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) arrived at the location to conduct a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation.

As of 9:15am this morning, NADMA tweeted that they managed to find 92 victims. According to the investigation, about 53 victims were found safe, 7 were injured and 8 victims, unfortunately, passed away, including a mother and a child. Ambulance arrived soon after to provide immediate medical assistance to the victims. SAR operation was resumed and by 10:45am, it was reported that the rescued victims were sent to Ulu Yam police station for resettlement.

According to Chinapress, it has been reported that the death toll has now reached 13 people. This information has been verified by the Ministry of Health. Astro Awani also reported that there are still about 25 other victims that are yet to be found.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has been alerted of the natural disaster that hit the campsite last night and has advised all ministers who went or will be heading down to the location to not interfere with the SAR operation. It was understood that the Prime Minister himself also visited the site last night.

At the time of writing, there have been no further updates by NADMA, local authorities, or ministers involved in helping the victims.
