Fireworks can be pretty, fun and exciting— but also deadly. And unfortunately, a recent accident with a fireworks display at a hotel in Port Dickson resulted in the loss of one person while another was seriously injured.
Reportedly, a group of men had been preparing for the New Year’s Eve countdown at the Lexis Hibiscus hotel by setting up a fireworks display. However, a sudden explosion caught the group off-guard, tragically ending one life.

The incident was initially captured by Twitter user @/tertusukdihati who allegedly witnessed the accident from a window overlooking the roof of the hotel. The one-minute video showed a fireworks display going off mid-morning on the roof. As soon as the commotion stopped, men could be seen running into the fray.
It was later confirmed that the men, licensed fireworks installers, had been working on setting up the tubes in preparation for the hotel’s New Year’s fireworks show around 12.30pm on 31st December. However, the display reportedly got out of control and exploded, leading to the death of a 40-year-old man and injuring a 39-year-old worker.
Lexis Hibiscus later released a statement expressing condolences to the deceased’s family. The hotel also confirmed that there had been a technical failure during the display’s installment and have revealed that they are currently investigating the issue to prevent such accidents from happening again.

Police have since asked the public to not exaggerate the incident so as to not hinder their investigation. Currently, they are viewing the incident as a sudden death case.
Our hearts and prayer go out to the victims’ families. We sincerely hope they will be able to find peace in the victim’s passing, and we hope the other recovers well soon. Watch the clip here:
