Comedian Harith Iskander has found himself in trouble over an insensitive joke recently. The issue has escalated to the point where the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) summoned the 58-year-old for further investigation. According to several reports, a date has already been set for the meeting.
Not only that, but the celeb and his family also received death threats, which led to the cancellation of his scheduled performance at Dewan Filharmonik. Although Harith hasn’t commented on the controversy yet, his ex-wife and manager, Dr Jezamin, shared her thoughts on the situation. Here’s what she had to say:
In her Instagram post over the weekend, Dr Jezamin said she hoped the person who made threats against her family and spread hate towards her ex-husband would receive their karma. “What cut deeper and shook me to my core was a vile threat of abuse against our children. Let me be crystal clear: threatening the safety of innocent children crosses every imaginable line,” she said sternly.
The CEO of Cell Biopetics Resources clarified that while everyone has the right to be upset about Harith’s joke on a sensitive issue, it does not give anyone the right to threaten the safety of their family, especially their children. “How do you justify that? Is this truly what you believe protects your religion or your beliefs?” she questioned the individual’s motives.
In a follow-up post showing Harith Iskander spending time with his children, Dr Jezamin updated that they have filed police reports regarding the threats they’ve received and trust the authorities to carry out their investigation. “To the individual who posted the outrageous comments and sparked this rage, I hope you take responsibility,” said the concerned mother.
According to Kosmo, the 31-year-old suspect has been arrested and will be remanded until 28th January to assist with the investigation. Inspector-General Tan Sri Razarudin Husain told reporters that police had confiscated the suspect’s mobile device and that the case would be investigated under Section 506 and Section 509 of the Penal Code.
