On 8th November, fans of Chinese cosplayer couple 仲尼Johnny and Karina Melnychuk were devastated after news of Johnny’s passing was confirmed. Reportedly, the 34-year-old internet celebrity had drowned while on a celebratory trip to Bali for his birthday.
While some details of the incident had initially been released, there were a few clashing facts. But, an official report has since been declared, clarifying the matter. One of which is how 仲尼Johnny (Xiao Fong Jhony, 黄小沣) drowned.
According to Chinese media 红星新闻, Karina had informed the hotel manager what had happened after being rescued. “She said he was very panicked and she wanted to help him, but the waves came and separated them,” the manager reportedly explained. He also added that Karina had difficulty falling asleep that night, allegedly out of worry for her husband’s safety.
The head of the search and rescue team later confirmed that 仲尼Johnny had drowned around 2.30pm on 7th November while swimming in a dangerous and prohibited area at Batu Belig Beach with his wife and friends. Reportedly, that area had signs declaring it off-limits for swimming as the current there was fast and strong. Karina also mentioned that while Johnny could swim, he was not as strong a swimmer as her.
A spokesperson from the rescue team also alleged that Johnny might have been suffering from cramps in his legs. However, police later revealed that Johnny had been hit by a large log in the sea while he had been swimming, causing him to drown. Authorities also confirmed there had been no foul play involved in the matter.
仲尼Johnny is survived by his wife, Ukranian cosplayer Karina and their daughter, Rosie. Karina was understandably distraught after they recovered his body and has not been seen on her socials since. Our hearts go out to the both of them, and we sincerely hope they will find peace.
