Idol fashion can come in many forms – but unfortunately, some idol groups have received criticism for their choice of stage outfits. Recently, the popular girl group (G)I-DLE ((여자)아이들) got some flak for their new stage outfits due to the inappropriate use of the Red Cross symbol.

(G)I-DLE is currently promoting their latest single, “Klaxon”, and recently appeared on a music show. Their outfits for the day were lifeguard-inspired, with shorts, tank tops and even whistles. However, also seen on the outfits were the Red Cross symbol in red and white. It’s worth noting that these outfits were custom-made, meaning the symbols were purposely included. Sure enough, soon after their appearance on the music show, (G)I-DLE received criticism for using the Red Cross symbol for aesthetic purposes.

In South Korea, the Red Cross emblem is legally protected and cannot be used without approval from the Korean Red Cross. A representative from the organisation revealed that they never approved the group’s agency, Cube Entertainment, to use the symbol on the outfits. However, they believe the misuse of the Red Cross was due to ignorance rather than malicious intent, so (G)I-DLE won’t be fined for using the symbol. On the other hand, some netizens also criticised the group and the agency for sexualising a professional uniform by placing the symbol, typically used to indicate medical aid, on tank tops and shorts.

Following the backlash, Cube Entertainment issued an apology for the misuse of the Red Cross emblem. In the statement, the company said they have also reached out to the Korean Red Cross to apologise for the issue. The agency also said they will take follow-up measures to prevent a recurrence. However, photos and videos of the members wearing the outfits remain on the group’s social media accounts.

It’s good that Cube Entertainment is taking responsibility for its actions and hope other K-pop companies will take note to prevent any more of this issue.
