No one said weddings are cheap – but should the prices differ based on your racial background? An advertisement for a wedding package in a Johor Bahru hotel recently went viral on an online forum, with the prices being drastically different for different cultures.
A user on Reddit shared the advertisement on Reddit, writing, “Wedding package price for different races”. The poster was for wedding packages available at the Berjaya Waterfront Hotel in Johor Bahru and shows the different wedding prices based on the chosen culture.

The following is the pricing for the weddings:
- Malay Wedding Package: RM788 per table for ten persons
- Chinese Wedding Package: RM1,888 per table for ten persons
- Indian Wedding Package: RM1,388 per table for ten persons

It’s worth noting that information on the poster was limited, and the wording made it seem the prices differ based on the client’s race. A quick search on the hotel’s website shows the complete description for each wedding package, providing more insight into the different pricing. An example would be the Chinese and Indian wedding packages feature a sparkling wine fountain during the ceremony. However, such inclusion is understandably not offered for the Malay wedding.
Nevertheless, the poster ignited a discussion on why the Chinese and Indian wedding packages are priced significantly higher than the Malay package. All in all, the comments were understanding, saying that the price difference makes sense when considering what each culture expects during their ceremony. Many concluded that the prices differ due to the cuisine options since Malay weddings won’t include pork or alcohol, which could increase the cost.

While most defended the pricing on the poster, many said the marketing team is at fault for any misunderstanding, adding that the designer could’ve phrased it better or added more information to clarify the pricing. What are your thoughts on this?
