When it comes to job search and recruitment, many believe it’s crucial to be professional in the matter – from the language you use to which medium you’re conversing on. Recently, a Twitter user shared a conversation between a recruiter and an interviewee that has gotten netizens questioning who is at fault.

Twitter user Farid Affy shared screenshots of a conversation between a job recruiter and a job seeker, asking who was at fault between the two. According to the screenshots, the recruiter from IBSB Group was conversing with a job seeker, Shafikah, via WhatsApp to discuss a job interview opportunity.

However, when asked about her details, Shafikah answered in one-word answers. The recruiter, Melur, called her out for the answers, saying Shafikah should try explaining more with her answers or at least learn the proper manner. The recruiter even remarked that the short answers already showed Shafikah’s personality, implying that the candidate might not be suitable for the company.

However, Shafikah ridiculed the recruiter, saying she wasn’t aware that the recruiter could determine her personality through a phone conversation. She also retaliates, saying even if her response did not satisfy the recruiter, it’s wrong to generalise her personality and attitude from a message. The conversation ended with Melur wishing the candidate “luck” for future opportunities with her attitude.

The conversation attracted tons of responses, with many sharing mixed opinions about who was more unprofessional. Many said the recruiter was at fault for expecting formal answers through a messaging app. Some also believed that using WhatsApp to contact someone for work is already a sign of someone unprofessional.

Some also criticised Shafikah for not answering politely and retaliating instead of acknowledging her mistake. Some even said her reply did not come off as someone looking for a job because she failed to show any effort. Many also agreed that Melur and Shafikah were both wrong, lamenting that the recruiter should’ve called or emailed if she wanted a more descriptive answer and that Shafikah should’ve responded politely.

Some netizens also questioned the legitimacy of the conversation, saying that Farid may have fabricated it for engagement. However, similar situations between job recruiters and candidates have happened before. Regardless, who do you think is wrong in this situation?
