As we all know, acting is so much more than simply pretending. However, for some actors, it can be difficult to separate themselves from their characters afterwards. Especially if their character went through something traumatising.
Taiwanese actress Jean Kao (高宇蓁) recently finished filming for allegedly one of the most difficult dramas in her life. However, the actress claims the film this time wasn’t physically taxing but psychologically challenging instead.

The 43-year-old actress is no stranger to getting into her role’s mindset for filming. After all, she is a veteran actress with shows like “Taste of Life (甘味人生)” and “Ordinary Love (世間情)” under her belt. However, her recent performance for the 2023 film “凤姐 (Sister Feng)” may just take the cake.
Jean’s recent film covers some heavy topics, such as prostitution culture in Taiwan, human trafficking, and the life of private prostitutes in Taiwan’s tea houses. Jean plays the role of a girl who was abducted and forced into prostitution at a tea house. The most demanding scene by far is when Jean’s character is gang raped by eight men.
“This isn’t a simple nude scene,” Jean reportedly stated. “I have constructed (the scene) mentally on my own for a while.” The actress claimed it helped her devote herself to the role and her performance. While that made playing the role easy, Jean was quick to admit it took a toll on her in other ways. “Physical (challenges) aren’t an obstacle, but to face all kinds of violence (which) repeatedly challenges (your) psychological tolerance, you must have a strong (resilience),” she said.

However, although filming for the show is over, Jean is allegedly unable to separate herself from her role. “It will take some time to return slowly to normal life,” the actress admitted. “Maybe you will need to go for a walk, travel, do what you need to (when you) film, and it should be fine.”
Well, Jean’s latest film certainly sounds like a piece of work! Hopefully, the actress will be able to drag herself out of the mind space soon.
