Japan Reportedly Lowering Legal Age To 18 For Actors To Star In Adult Videos

When people speak of Japan, plenty comes to mind. Their culture, food and lifestyle make it seem like paradise to many. However, the country has its unpleasant sides as well. Specifically, the adult video (AV) industry.

While most actors in the AV industry have consented to being filmed and are of the legal age, recent news has caused concern among citizens. Japan is apparently set to lower the national legal age to 18 starting 1st April. This potentially means that there will be actors as young as 18-years-old starring in pornographic videos.

The announcement incited an outcry after the news broke. Although framed to give teenagers on the cusp of adulthood more freedom, others spotted potential problems. One of them was a glaring loophole which would allow companies to contract 18-year-olds to perform in AV films. Currently, authorities are holding meetings in hopes of amending the law.

During a meeting yesterday (Wednesday, 23rd March), one member spoke up about her concerns, specifically regarding the loophole. “Beginning 1st April, there will be victimisation, and pornography (involving) high school girls will become popular,” she stated. The member mentioned that she was worried Japan would become synonymous with pornography.

Thankfully, the AV Human Rights and Ethics Organization has already started moving to prevent backlashes form the new law. Representative Director Yoko Shida also announced yesterday that they have issued a notice in light of the news. The notice, sent to AV companies, requests they only allow actors aged 20 and over to be filmed. They hope for compliance and agreement from the companies to avoid taking advantage of 18 and 19 year olds.

Previously, such matters could be evaded as AV contracts had a clause which allowed parents to cancel a contract signed by a child. However, by lowering the legal age, 18 and 19 year olds would no longer be afforded that protection.

Former AV actresses have claimed that girls are often tricked into the industry, brainwashed and forced into performing harsh and cruel pornographic films. Hopefully, authorities in Japan will consider the effects the new law could have on their kids and make the right decision.
