When it comes to goods and services, we’re often want to get our money’s worth. It does make sense. None of us really want to be cheated out of our money. But, there are so many scams nowadays that sometimes, we might miss a trick!

Malaysian artist Jack Lim (林德荣), like many others, has been busy celebrating Chinese New Year. However, during a recent dinner with his friends, Jack discovered lead weights in a fish. Jack then suspected it was a seller’s ploy at gaining more profit!

During an interview with Chinese news site China Press, Jack shared that he and his friends had a meal at a restaurant. Like many others, they were having a quick get-together for Chinese New Year. And apparently, the biggest draw of the meal was the toli shad (ikan Terubuk) which allegedly weighed over 3kg and had an estimated market price of RM1000.

“After the fish was steamed and served, we saw the first piece of metal while (eating) the fish. I sighed, (saying), “Wow! This fish wasn’t netted, it was caught”,” Jack told China Press. But, to their surprise, it wasn’t the only piece of metal found in the fish! Apparently, the group dug up a total of ten pieces of metal, all hidden inside the fish.

It didn’t take long for Jack to draw his own conclusions. “The bigger the toli shad, the better the taste. So, for every additional kilogram, the unit price will be different,” Jack reportedly stated. He estimated that the metal pieces weighed about 400 grams and suspected the merchant had attempted to increase the weight of a 2kg fish to 3kg, hoping to earn more.

Jack explained that they hadn’t discovered the trick until it was on the table thanks to the way the fish was cooked. Apparently, the fish should not be cut open after being caught. It is usually steamed whole in plain water to maintain the quality of its meat and taste.

However, the group ended up eating the fish in the end. Jack claimed that the group had checked the metal for sigs of rust. As it looked fine, they believed there was nothing poisonous in the fish. So, they all opted to eat it anyway.

Still, Jack wasn’t apparently too upset with the incident. “It was an eye-opener to know that someone used this method to increase the fish’s weight,” he supposedly told China Press. And, we’re grateful he shared it with us.! Hopefully, we too will be on the lookout for such tricks the next time we want to dine on fish.
