#IT: “Mama” Director In Negotiations To Replace Cary Fukunaga As Director

“It” (no pun intended) was released more than 2 decades ago, but the psychological horror/drama miniseries (based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name) remains one of the scariest horror movies we’ve ever seen.

Not only because Tim Curry was such a great actor, but also because his killer crown character was so freaky that we had nightmares for months. And now, the 90s horror classic has found its way back to haunt us because The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Andy Muschietti is in negotiations to direct New Line’s upcoming remake of “It”.

The project, which will be covered over the course of 2 films, was supposed to begin filming in June. However, the production was forced to be delayed when “True Detective” helmer Cary Fukunaga dropped out of director’s chair due to budgetary reasons that stemmed from creative differences. Prior to Fukanaga’s departure, the project was already in development for years, with Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith, and David Katzenberg serving as producers.

There’s no start date for the project yet, but the studio is already searching for a new writer who can tailor a script to Muschietti’s vision.

Andy Muschietti Mama Madrid Photocall

Muschietti is best known for “Mama”, his debut feature film he co-wrote with Neil Cross and his sister Barbara Muschietti. It was based on his own 3-minutes short film of same name, which prompted legendary horror filmmaker Guillermo del Toro to come aboard as an executive producer. According to del Toro, the short film included “one of the scariest little scenes” that he has “ever seen”. The feature film, which starred Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, grossed $146 million on a budget of $15 million.

Following the success of “Mama”, he was hired to direct several projects and at one point, he was attached to helm Universal Pictures’ upcoming remake of “The Mummy”.

Will Poulter as Pennywise the Clown

“The Maze Runner” star Will Poulter is no longer officially attached to the project due to scheduling issues, but the studio may come back to him after the script is finalised.

Andy’s sister will most likely come aboard the “It” remake as a producer while Jon Silk is executive producing It. Richard Brener, Walter Hamada, and Dave Neustadter will oversee the project for New Line while Niija Kuykendall is shepherding for Warner Bros.

What do you think of the replacement? Who do you think should direct the remake instead? Share your thoughts in the comments box below.
