The zombies are coming. Netflix will release its latest Indonesian Original, “The Elixir”, just in time for Halloween. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kimo Stamboel, the film combines Indonesian cultural traditions with a terrifying zombie outbreak, offering a fresh take on the horror genre for a global audience.
Set in a remote village near Yogyakarta, “The Elixir” tells the story of a family well known for its herbal medicine business. The patriarch’s obsession with power and the pursuit of longevity sets off a chain of events that spirals into a nightmare. What begins as a search for eternal life unleashes an outbreak that threatens to destroy the entire village.
The film draws on Indonesian heritage, weaving together herbal medicine, family dynamics, and folklore while delivering suspense and thrills.
Written by Kimo Stamboel, Agasyah Karim, and Khalid Kashogi, and produced by Edwin Nazir under Mowin Pictures, “The Elixir” stars Eva Celia, Mikha Tambayong, Donny Damara, Dimas Anggara, Marthino Lio, Kiki Narendra, Ardit Erwandha, Claresta Taufan, and Varen Arianda Calief.
Filmed on location in Yogyakarta between June and August 2024, the production captures the authenticity of its setting. This marks Kimo Stamboel’s first zombie feature, following his acclaimed works such as “Sewu Dino” and “Blood Curse”.
“The Elixir” premieres worldwide on Netflix on 23rd October 2025, bringing Indonesian horror to the global stage with a story that is both culturally rooted and universally thrilling.
